Synopsis:
Sybil Delling has spent nine years dreaming of having no dreams at all. Like the other foundling girls who traded a decade of service for a home in the great cathedral, Sybil is a Diviner. In her dreams she receives visions from six unearthly figures known as Omens. From them, she can predict terrible things before they occur, and lords and common folk alike travel across the kingdom of Traum's windswept moors to learn their futures by her dreams.
Just as she and her sister Diviners near the end of their service, a mysterious knight arrives at the cathedral. Rude, heretical, and devilishly handsome, the knight Rodrick has no respect for Sybil's visions. But when Sybil's fellow Diviners begin to vanish one by one, she has no choice but to seek his help in finding them. For the world outside the cathedral's cloister is wrought with peril. Only the gods have the answers she is seeking, and as much as she'd rather avoid Rodrick's dark eyes and sharp tongue, only a heretic can defeat a god.
Review:
this was SO MUCH FUN. I did initially struggle to get into the book (had to put it down multiple times) as the writing took a little bit to get into. this book feels like it could be a mix of so many different genres — gothic horror, paranormal, romance fantasy?! it felt like i was reading a different story after every 100 pages, which isn’t a bad thing per se but i’ve just never read anything like this before?? and i *really* enjoyed it, but also it was definitely quite the adjustment!
my favorite thing ever to come out of this book was the batlike gargoyle UGH 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼 his retorts and personality are 10/10. the perfect companion to ever exist. i tabbed this book to death and 70% of it may have been from the gargoyle. the remaining 30% is probably of rory being the most devastatingly charismatic MMC to ever exist.
now it’s 1:30 am and yes i did finish the book 30 minutes ago and had to jump on here to write my fresh thoughts before they get all jumbled up in the morning. i am in pain from the emotional rollercoaster but also i had the best time giggling and squealing over the swoony and tender moments 🥹🥹🥹 love love LOVE. so unique and unlike anything i’ve ever read before.
thank you to Hachette for sending over an early copy in exchange for an honest review <3
